Amsterdam is the capital and most populous city of the Netherlands with 872,680 inhabitants within the city, 1,558,755 in the urban area and 2,480,394 in the urban area. Amsterdam is located in the province of North Holland and is colloquially known as the "Venice of the North", as many canals are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Amsterdam was founded on the Amstel, which was dammed to control floods;The name of the city is derived from the Amstel dam. Amsterdam emerged as a small fishing village at the end of the 12th century and became one of the most important ports in the world and the main financial and commercial center during the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century. The city is also known for its nightlife and festive activities. with several of its discos (Melkweg, Paradiso) among the most famous in the world. Known mainly for its artistic heritage, the sophisticated canal system and the narrow houses with gabled facades; Well-preserved legacies from the city's golden age in the 17th century.
